When mine came in the mail, I wormed my way into it, SOMEHOW managed to zip it up by myself, and then I sat on my bed thinking "This is weird. I am weird."

And then I painted it with fabric paint and my life went terrible for like a month.

There are things that I did not understand about painting a spandex suit that I understand now.
1: It's POROUS, which meant that if I wanted to paint it while wearing it (and I DID), then I was going to be white with paint afterward.
2: The fabric loses its flexibility when painted, which essentially translates into: the parts you cover in paint become a weird fabric cast of your body. This meant a lot of discomfort when sliding my right leg in and out of the suit.

But really, things were going pretty well. I'd sit like a creeper in my boyfriend's dining room, painting myself and then blow drying my limbs for long periods of time in the hopes that I would dry before I had a spasm and got paint all over the place.

And then the incident happened. The picture above depicts the back of the suit. I could not reach my own back and boyfriend was having an aneurism every time I asked for help (because he was afraid of screwing things up), so I decided to paint the back OFF of my body. This was the single most catastrophic mistake I've ever made (dramatization).

For you see, when the paint dried, the fabric constricted, rendering it highly inflexible. When I went to put the suit on the next day - "vvvrrrrrrrrt!" the zipper, I'm not even kidding, split down the middle. And then I cried. And then my boyfriend thought I was crazy.

It was then, as I sat crumpled over in bed, crying, that I realized I wasn't having fun anymore. I had spent 6 months pulling all of this together, and this one mistake called into question all of that. Suddenly I was taking it all way too seriously. Realistically, this only happened within the final two weeks before the convention. Because before then I couldn't have been happier.

But the gods of cosplay had to remind me that I was a novice, and amateur, and most of all, they had to put me in my place for being so damn cocky.

I spent the parts of CON in costume perpetually keeping good posture, because if I bent over too far, the zipper would split. I soaked the back in peroxide, which chipped and loosened up a lot of the paint enough that I at least had some flexibility. But I cannot stress how much more comfortable I would have been had I not had the constant worry that my life could at any moment get embarrassing.

But the result...?

The reception of my costume was platinum. So many people needed my picture that it pretty much annoyed the people I was was walking around with. And it was just my luck that one of the party rooms was Zelda themed, so I kept running into people demanding that I show up there. When I did, some guy saw me, gaped, and shouted "I'm SO HAPPY you're here!!"

Got a lot of hugs that I didn't want. Got a lot of compliments that reassured me that the last six months of my life weren't wasted, and I had a really great time.

So... now I know what that's like. Now I never have to put myself through that again. I'm glad I did the character justice, and I'm glad people liked it. I'm glad I did it. I'm happy to know what it feels like to get a lot of attention at a convention. And now that I know, I can say I think I'm happier just being part of the crowd.

But no, seriously. This is why I was dreading it. Do you see all those lines? Ow.

And then I stuck the designs on and was relieved to see all of this take some shape... as it was confirming to me that while I was crazy, I was at least not a failure.

After this, I created the clay bits and glued them on, which was trickier than I wanted because the paperclay and the hot glue and the paper created this terrible orgy of materials that made everything not want to stick. I'm still not sure how I got it to. I put off doing the snakes FOREVER because I was afraid of screwing them up. But while they took well over a week to dry fully enough for me to glue them on, they turned out better than anticipated.

And here is the back. I got lazy and used twine to do the details back there... which wasn't the best call because it was all... twiney, and therefore more textured than I'd wanted.

And THEN. I painted it. With spray paint. From Michael's. And it was good.

I purchased a long orange wig off of eBay, which was pretty perfect in terms of color. I debated with myself over whether I was going to style it with gel, and then realized that if I somehow screwed it up I would cut myself deliberately and shut myself away in my house to never see the light of day again. So I didn't.

And it was fine. ...With the exception that it tangles if you even look at it.

The ears were made out of the same foam that the helm itself is made off. I mixed the blue color myself and I'm feeling pretty cocky about it because LOOK AT IT. The only thing that would make it better was if it glowed.

Stripes weren't painted here, don't judge.

So that was the process of the Fused Shadow. The one that I started in like bloody January and completed like in JUNE. Thank god I went to art college so that my opus could wind up being a piece of exercise mat that I wore on my head for two days.

Wanna know where it is now? The garage. Life is cruel.

Midna: The Fused Shadow Part 1

I've been basing my construction heavily on the tactics used by a cosplayer called Aleze, as she's widely regarded as having one of the best executions of the costume ever. I'm chubbier and no doubt shorter than her, but I'm hoping to use my child-bearing hips to my advantage.

Like her, I used a foam exercise mat for construction on the helm. I searched a ton of places online but was reluctant to make a purchase without seeing the actual thickness of the mat. Luckily, my friend Lindsay had an old mat that she was willing to let me cut up - on the caveat that it was chewed up and had cat pee on it.

So, after washing the mat THOROUGHLY in my shower, and using a hair dryer to accelerate the removal of moisture (I'm impatient), I was able to commence.

I first measured my head with the tape measure and then cut a strip of the foam to act as the initial base. Now, originally I had heard a couple people reference using Liquid Nails to glue this stuff together, and so I was using binder clips to keep things in place while the Liquid Nails dried.

This, as it turns out is a CROCK, and not only does it take too long to dry, but it wasn't doing a very good job for me. Hot glue is a miracle of modern science and did the trick just fine in like no time at all.

Clearly I'm hilarious. It looks a little tight, but once I cut the eye piece...

Much more spacious! You'll notice I'm going with the 'Gamecube' version of Midna wherein her left eye is the one covered by the fused shadow. I did this because Link is originally left-handed, but in the Wii version the game had to be mirrored to accommodate the fact that most players are right handed. Sooo... in my nerdy little head, the Gamecube version is the right one. LOGIC.

Doubled up the foam to add to the bulkiness of the helm, began blocking in some of the details with pencil, and then added the second tier to the thing. You can see the kitty teeth marks! Thanks, Lestat!

Cutting the ear spaces was a guessing game based off of screen shots from the game and other people's attempts at this costume. With all this completed, it was time to make the 'horns'

I was trying to do this thing where I used maths to figure out how big it should be. That came back to bite me in the ass but we'll touch on that a bit later. Anyways, I used my art board to draw out the pattern first, I then cut it out with an x-acto knife and traced it onto my foam with pencil.

Like that, dawgs.

Now, when I held the thing to the mask, it looked hunky dory to me. I was excited so I promptly glued it on and several hot glue gun burns later I had to face this:

Too damn tall. Do you SEE how displeased I look? Where did my maths go wrong?

In a panic I knifed the horns off and tried to figure out just where they needed to be in the grand scheme of things. ...Then I had to go to dinner with my friend Nicole so my process was interrupted and I was stressed out because I didn't know how gluing the pieces back on would go.

But as it turns out, fine. The 'scars' will be covered up with poster board and paperclay later.

You can see how much happier I am, and how much less unruly the thing is.

So after that I started using the poster board and x-acto knife to cut out patterns which I will glue to the horns part of the helm to give it that 'relief' look.

This is the left side. This hurt the hell out of my fingers to cut because the board is mega thick. So once I figured out just how much more sucky the right side is going to be...

I got scared and gave up cutting for the night. Before getting to that point, I put on a paper base where the eye will be (I need something for the paper clay to stick to) and I started etching right into the foam for the details on the lower part of the helm.

So that's where things stand today. They got married this weekend after 31 years of being together. A couple of days before the wedding, my mother texted me and told me she couldn't find any cards for gay marriages.

...So I made one.

Pride. Geddit?

Okay, actually I didn't think of that joke until after it was done, but I'm still clever, I promise.

Done in watercolor with gouache for the linework while watching a particularly saucy episode of Rome. There are actually some really subtle blues in the mane that the scanner just didn't want to pick up, so that's a little disappointing. They really liked the card though.

Honestly, I checked around and there isn't really a surplus of good gay wedding cards out there. Okay, granted not every state is on the gay marriage bandwagon, but it's not going to stay that way forever. (Final Sequence)

And thus, after starting this like 2 months ago, the journey comes to an end. Let's check it out.

So, I picked up where I left off and added in the rest of the main. Basically I just cut more cardboard and twisted/tore it till it looked roughly similar to the original mask. Then I used more paperclay to sculpt the crescent for the top of the head.

After letting it dry I hot glued it to the top, using some folded cardboard to make it sit on the head straight.

Then it was time to spray paint!

I first coated it with a base white spray paint, priding myself over being able to avoid doing it all by hand. I used two more colors after this; one a satin finish blue, the other was one of those special-type spray paints that leaves you with a stoney- texture as you paint it. I don't know how it works, but it's magic. Mine was a grey color, and originally I started to apply that to the mask first with the intention of covering it with the blue. Then I got the brilliant idea to put the blue down first and then spatter the grey stone on. THIS WAS A GREAT MOVE.

After a healthy dose of self-congratulation, I gathered a piece of bristol paper and applied the same paint job so I could later cut it out into eye shapes.

I glued the painted eye shapes to the back of the mask like so. Then glued a piece of black fabric over the mouth and nose so you could no longer see through them. Then I flipped the mask over and painted the eyes.

I used more black fabric to cover the back of the mask to give it a more uniform look, then cut a small hole in the fabric so you can hang it on a nail.

Bam! Finished product! I unveil it tonight, though admittedly I'll be a little sad to let it go.

All in all, I estimate the cost of it to be in about the $40-50, only because the stoney spray paint was a bit pricey and it took like 2 things of paperclay to get the base down. In terms of total time to complete, er... things got a little convoluted when I decided to take a crazy long break from it. At a rough guess I would say about 5-6 hours, NOT including all the time I waited for the clay/paint to dry.

Seriously though, I was a genius with that spray paint.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thatnamejade.blogspot.com/2010/08/im-making-mask-final-sequence.html' title='I'm Making a Mask! Also cuz I like him and stuff. We went to see a DJ set of Shpongle last month, and the experience was lucid enough to sell me a bit more on the electronic scene. I've been fairly lost on the music front (on the artistic front in general) lately, so anything that works to motivate me clearly needs to be clung to. Pictures are going to be small for now, but larger ones will come once it's finished.

So, for making masks, I always use a base-form. And because this mask has three sets of eyes, I used two slightly modified half-masks to both give me extra height on the head as well as give me a basic guide for where those extra oculars should go. Then there was hot glue. And hot glue always means burns. Always.

After lubing up the base nice and proper with petroleum jelly (you know, like you use for all your lube - needs), I began applying the Paperclay.

I love Paperclay for many reasons. It air dries, it's extremely lightweight, and it's a very easy material to manipulate. I covered the base, adding depth to the cheek-bones and sculpting the nose out a bit more. For now, all the eye cavities are empty, because I have some sort of crazy idea to put the eyes in later that I'm just sort of hoping will work out. One six ounce package of Paperclay later, once I was satisfied with the shape (I went back and made the brow-lines a bit sadder, and made the mouth less curved so it wasn't being so damn happy), I started working on the lower part of the 'mane'.

Cardboard! No one can say I am not environmentally conscious, what with all of my 'upcycling' and all. Fun fact: this cardboard came from a box that was used to ship a copy of Lost Moon to me. This book (signed by Jim Lovell!) was later given to Boyfriend as a gift.

Moving on. More hot glue was involved in this process, this time with a 30% decrease in burn rate. Pieces were individually cut, with size and shape being determined by a very convoluted process that probably could have been done more effectively if I knew things like math. Then I painted it white, which I would post a picture of except it really isn't all that interesting.

Then it had to sit overnight.

I actually hate this sort of waiting process, especially because the longer it takes to dry, the higher the chance that something awful is going to happen to it in the mean-time. Taking precaution, I placed it on a towel rack in the bathroom to ensure my monster of a savannah cat, Mojito wouldn't eat it. Nigh 24 hours later, I checked up on it.

Still wasn't all the way dry, then I had this brilliant idea of digging through the bathroom cupboard to see if my housemate had a hairdryer. She did, and a few short minutes worth of bending the base mask and being gentle and some minor cussing, the mask was free. Albeit the underside of it was inherently a tad unstable, and the drying process cracked the mask in several places.

This gets remedied by busting out more Paperclay and patching over all the cracks. I use a bit of water on my fingers to help smooth things out. Once that was done, and with the help of the hairdryer, I set out to attach the lower mane to the face.

To preserve the structural integrity of the mask, I put it back on the base - as until it's 100% dry, laying it down without the base could cause the edges to widen. I used Paperclay as my means of fastening the pieces together. It took a lot of adjustments, as doing stuff on one side would cause the clay on the other side to crack/separate. Overall, NOT an efficient way of doing things. After I did the front, I quick-dried it and worked on reinforcing in in the back. Once all of this was done, it looked like this:

(If you look real close, you can spot my Silent Hill monster, Abe in the background)

And that's where it's at for the night. I don't feel comfortable doing anything else to it until it's dry and not liable to fall apart. All of my masks are actually pretty stable, you just don't want to go flinging them around. I've broken a couple, but that's what I get for moving so damn much.

Well, because it's not done yet, I'm feeling a lack of closure. So I'm going to settle all of this by showing you a picture of Mojito laying in a pair of pants I had to abandon after using the bathroom because she wouldn't get out.

Gaga and Forgotten Monsters

I realized after my last post that I didn't include some monster doodles I did. Despite what may be interpreted as complete and utter freakiness, Abe is the best cat I've ever owned.

Here's an actual picture.

Some Stuff About The Russian Language

If you are acquainted with me in the world outside the internets, you're most likely aware that I've been teaching myself Russian in the past couple months. It's been fairly slow progress, considering I just do it whenever I feel so inclined, but I'm steadily picking things up and I wanted to share a few fantastic resources.

RussianPod101.com is a fantastic site and by far my favorite learning resource. If you're fortunate enough to have a subscription you get a bunch of goodies like word for word PDFs of all the lessons, flashcards... and other things. I do not have a subscription, but from the site you can mark the lessons you've completed and you do get access to the lessons. Of course, I'm also subscribed to the podcast on iTunes so I can listen to it whenever I need. Erik and Anna are awesome hosts, and my general tactic is to go through a podcast and take notes, repeating stuff when I need to. They also provide cultural insights and tips. By far, my most relied upon source.

RussianLessons.net is really good about sitting you down and explaining to you all the messy stuff that has to do with conjugation and grammar. I've found this to be really helpful because sometimes it's a little difficult if I'm just being told this stuff verbally. It also gives you the alphabet straight up, and more than anything I recommend learning the alphabet before you do anything else. Once you understand the alphabet, you can pretty much read any Russian word out loud. The Cyrillic alphabet isn't all about tricks and things like silent k's like the English language. Oh, got off track. Anyways, good source. Also they have bits of audio to help you with pronunciation.

Quizlet.com has a section with Russian flashcards. It's rubbish for learning pronunciation, but good for giving you some basics, and helping you with reading comprehension. When I wanted to know the words for the days of the week, this place helped. ...Yep.

Rosetta Stone is... well, I'm in the begining stages of trying it and thus far I've had to say the word 'Devotchka' upwards of 70 times. Until further notice I'm not going to say it's worth the money. It throws conjugation at you, and because of the 'immersion' aspect of the program nothing is really explained. If I had not been aware of both the Cryillic alphabet and the fact that Russian conjugation is a bitch, I'd have been really confused. BUT, it is kind of fun, and a little addictive, and I like it when I do finally grasp something. I think later lessons that don't treat me like I'm a 2nd grader will prove to show me that the program really does have reason to cost $550 for all three language levels.

So, add in the Collins Gem Russian Dictionary and The Dictionary of Russian Obscenities and a Ukranian friend you force to help you when you don't know how to pronounce something, and you essentially have a lot of really strong elements to teach yourself Russian.

I'm doing pretty good so far and I've not lost my motivation yet so here I go, once again plunging myself into something I may never wind up using. ...Except if I wind up going to Ukraine. Who knows.

Пока пока!

Cat Plane!

So, I'm talking to my friend, Yevgeny, and he's telling me about how boring being in flight class was on Saturday. He informed me that he was trying to imagine what a cat plane would look like, y'know, the normal side affect of being bored and sleepy.

"Like Catbus?" I suggested, showing him a picture. He complied. I told him he should draw a cat plane, and then he turned it back on me spouting off some absurd nonsense like how *I'm* the artist and blah blah blah.

So... um... Cat Plane. This is one of the crazier things I've drawn, and that's saying a lot considering I drew monsters for my senior project. Still, it's nice drawing for fun again. I should take suggestions from people more often.

Portraits

Finally got off my butt and drew something today. At first I was using the interactive builder over at overnightprints.com, but it wasn't working quite right for me. So I decided I'd make a template in Photoshop and import it. But then my roommate yelled at me and told me to use InDesign, thus began an hour long process of my roommate spouting off directions at me and me gawking at her and whining because I am not a graphic designer and as such things like InDesign boggle me. Anyways, here are the results.

They'll have a glossy finish and rounded corners because Overnightprints is awesome like that. Only $2 more for them fancy corners? Hells yeah, I'm gonna be classy!
So yeah, hopefully they'll get here and look great, because I'm going to have 100 of each design and that means I'm stuck with them until I give them all away.

This week I hang my show. All my prints are in their frames, but a couple of them need something nailed to the back so I can actually hang them. I'm also being ambitious and printing out a book that needs to be completed by Friday, so if that and my internship don't kill me then I'll be sitting pretty for graduation.

Being a graduating MCAD student means you are tired and lonely.

I Is Artist

I sold four of my seven masks at MCAD's annual Art Sale this weekend! Which is weird to think of. Somewhere floating around in the back of my car is the first ever drawing I did of him, but for now, 2004 is the best I can do. I don't know how much this can really speak for how much I've improved since then, but I think it's kind of fun to look back and see how this particular character has evolved over the years.
The rub is that I still can't tell you what he's supposed to be. I've begun to accept the term 'crazy monkey man', which seems to be the most popular reaction to the drawings I do of him.
I have a tattoo of him on my back, circa the 2006 version. It's just one of those things I figure will stick with me. He seems to get more and more 'human' every year, but I reckon he'll always maintain the red hair and stupid eyebrows.

Yup... progress.

When I'm Not Being a Real Artist

I'm making stupid drawings of my friends as glorified stick figures beating the shit out of each other because I am passive aggressive.

...Just thought I'd be honest about it.
